florida books

My pal Lynne Barrett won the Gold Medal in this year's Florida Book Awards. Michael Lister is making his book Blood of the Lamb available for free download for a limited time. I'll be joining both Lynne and Michael at the FIT Creative Writing Institute in May. Lynne and I will also be at the Rosemary Beach Foundation Conference for Writers in May.

Today is the last day to get your free e-copy of Florida Heat, edited by Michael Lister. I've got a story in there, "Iffy."  So does James W. Hall, Tom Corcoran and many others.

bread and circuses

Imbecile Governor Bat Boy, Rick Scott, wonders what we need with anthropologists or writers or readers or philosophers. You might argue he only wants to intitutionalize what has already happened to education here in America--our universities have become vocational schools and sponsors of professional sports teams. And what's wrong with that? Scott was Chairman and CEO of Columbia/HCA and oversaw the systematic medical fraud the company perpetrated on the federal government. Like all good capitalists these days he's was rewarded, not punished, for his crimes. He was forced to resign with $355 million worth of stock, a $9 million severance package while the company and stockholders paid back over $2 billion in fines--the largest fraud settlement in US history. He was absent the day they covered fraud in ethics class at business school.

the more things change . . .

"Floridians were shocked last week when police announced that the spokesman for the state's Department of Children and Families had been arrested and charged with peddling child pornography."
